Human remains found nearly 30 years ago identified as missing Wisconsin man

Authorities have confirmed that human remains found nearly 30 years ago in a Sanford wooded area belong to John Richard Moulis, a Wisconsin native who was reported missing in January 1997. Moulis, who disappeared at the age of 37, was identified using advanced technology and genetic genealogy. This development has provided long-awaited answers for his family, although the circumstances of his disappearance and death remain under investigation.

Moulis went missing on January 21, 1997, and his remains were discovered months later by two individuals walking their dog in the same area. At that time, investigators did not link the remains to Moulis’ case. According to Bianca Gillett, a public information officer from the Sanford Police, efforts to revisit the evidence eventually led to Moulis’ identification. He had relocated to the Orlando area around 1986, working in janitorial services and possibly for a Disney-connected contractor. Tragically, his sister, his closest living relative, died just two days after the confirmation of his identity. Sanford police are now requesting that anyone with information about Moulis or his final days come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
