Suspect in Orlando Sexual Assault Has Extensive Criminal Record

Gervin Jawaski Lewis, a 46-year-old man arrested for allegedly threatening, sexually assaulting, and robbing a woman in downtown Orlando, has an extensive criminal record. According to court documents, he has been classified by authorities as a violent offender of special concern and a career criminal. The incident occurred early on October 6, at approximately 5:40 a.m., when police responded to reports of an attack on the 600 block of West Amelia Street.

The victim recounted that Lewis approached her, brandished a weapon, and assaulted her before fleeing the scene. Following investigative efforts, police identified Lewis and took him into custody on several charges, including armed sexual battery and armed robbery. Additionally, he is wanted for existing charges in another county. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith commended the quick response of his officers, emphasizing their dedication to community safety. Lewis is currently being held at the Orange County Jail, with his initial court appearance set for Thursday.

Court records reveal that Lewis has a long history of offenses, with previous convictions for drugs, burglary, and domestic violence dating back several years. He served time for cocaine possession in 2000 and later received a nine-year sentence for burglary. In a 2019 case, Lewis acknowledged the possibility of a life sentence for breaking into his girlfriend’s home but opted for a plea agreement, resulting in a short jail term. Lewis’s legal troubles also include a 2009 conviction for indecent exposure and ongoing investigations in Marion County for allegations related to human trafficking and soliciting a minor.
